Spot-A-Spot: Empowering Beauty Professionals to Save Lives

A new TAFE NSW microskill course, Spot-A-Spot, is helping hairdressers, barbers and beauticians play a vital role in the early detection of skin cancer. Designed to build confidence and awareness, the course equips beauty industry professionals with the skills to recognise suspicious spots on the head and neck, and to start important conversations with clients when something doesn’t look right.

With Australia recording one of the highest rates of melanoma in the world, early detection is critical. 1 person dues from melanoma every 6 hours in Australia. Encouragingly, around 90% of melanomas can be successfully treated if identified early, highlighting the powerful impact this training can have.

Developed by TAFE NSW in collaboration with industry leaders and health experts, the online course takes just 45 minutes to complete and provides participants with a certificate upon completion. Beyond education, it also supports a greater cause, with a portion of enrolment fees contributing to The Australian Melanoma Research Foundation’s research, awareness and early detection programs.
